Diego Aponte and the MSC legacy
He has recently took on the mantle of CEO of the Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC), the world’s second largest shipping organisation, but Diego Aponte has so far remained a bit of a mystery. His father, Gianluigi Aponte, has been a constant fixture in the industry’s finest publications and their headlined. At the time of the announcement he expressed his warmest congratulations for his son’s newest position as well as revealing that he would be continuing on with the company as Group Executive Chairman and will keep supporting the business.
Diego joined the MSC team in 1997 and has since taken on a wide variety of roles, including line management where was in charge of administering all aspects of the trade. His most recent years with the company have seen him taking increasingly more responsibility in the wider affairs of MSC, finally leading to him being appointed Vice President. As chairman of Terminal Investment Limited, he has overseen the growth of the company’s port administration branch.
“[The company] has a proud heritage,” said Diego. “Over the past 40 years my father founded and led MSC from a one-ship operator to become the second largest container shipping line in the world. He has created an influential global brand; [it] inspires passion, dedication and entrepreneurism wherever you look. The management team, together with the family board, will continue to work hard to keep MSC as special today as it was in 1970.”
His dedication to the role cannot be overstated and the brand has so far maintained its high standards throughout all of its business operations. Under Diego’s leadership, they once again made the headlines in early April after adding the world’s largest container ship, the MSC Oscar, to their fleet. The Panama Maritime Authority (AMP) says this is a reflection of the effort made by the present administration, to attract newly built vessels.
“We work in a competitive environment where there is fierce competition and the only way for our ships to counter freight rates and rising oil prices and fuel costs is to build larger and more efficient ships,” said Aponte.
“We can also add that the MSC Oscar is the most efficient ship in the world, that was built thinking about respecting the environment and not only can she carry 35% more cargo, but consume 35% less fuel, which will reduce the carbon dioxide emission by 35%. The efficiency gains are therefore enormous,” he went on to say.
